Details of museums in Extremadura which are open on All Saint’s Day

Museums dependent Extremadura regional government and the Visual Arts Centre Foundation Helga de Alvear will be open to the public during the All Saints Day holiday, including on the 1st November, a national holiday in Spain.

Thus, the Museum of Cáceres, the Vostell of Malpartida of Cáceres, The Extremaduran and Latin American Museum of Contemporary Art (MEIAC) of Badajoz, and the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz will be open normal hours on 2, 3 and 4 November.

These museums will also be open to visitors on Thursday, 1st November, although “with variations on the normal schedule in some cases,” reports the Extremaduran Government in a press release.

Specifically, the schedule for All Saints Day at the Museum of Cáceres will be from 10.00 to 15.00 and from 16.00 to 19.30.  People who come to the Museum of Cáceres may view, in addition to the permanent collection, a temporary exhibition: ‘Women: types and stereotypes‘, composed of images by photographer Jose Ortiz Echagüe in which, “through feminine portraits,  the dying out of human beings is documented.”

Meanwhile, for the MEIAC, the opening hours for 1st November will be from 10.00 to 15.00 hours and will include access to two temporary exhibitions: ‘Anthology of Gervasio Sánchez’ that offers an extensive tour of the career of the winner of the National Photography Prize 2009, and ‘Trajectories. Ten years of video and photography in the Coca-Cola Collection ‘, which includes the recent work of 37 artists in Spanish and Portuguese, including Chema Alvargonzález, José Manuel Ballester, Daniel Canogar and Joao Penalva.

The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Badajoz and the Vostell of Malpartida of Cáceres will open on All Saints’ Day in time from 10.00 to 15.00 hours in the case of the Archaeological Pacense and from 10.00 to 13.30 and from 16.00 to 18.30 hours in the case of the Vostell.

Finally, the Visual Arts Center Foundation Cáceres Helga de Alvear will open on 1, 2 and November from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00 and on Sunday 4th November in the morning only, from 10.00 to 14.30.  The museum is currently hosting the exhibition ‘Language Games’, opened last Friday to coincide with the celebration of Forosur Cáceres 12.

Thus, the Ministry of Education and Culture aims to “respond to the requirements of tourists who choose Extremadura as a destination on these days” and to “facilitate access to permanent collections or temporary exhibitions at major museums in the region.”

The CNIG (Centro Nacional de Informacion Geografica – Spain’s equivalent to the UK’s Ordnance Survey) walking map of Monfrague National Park in Extremadura Spain.  The map has contours at 10m intervals, vivid relief shading, and colouring/symbols to indicate various types of terrain and vegetation.  It highlights tourist information such as campsites, sport and leisure facilities, places of interest, etc. The map contain a 1km UTM grid, plus latitude and longitude margin ticks at intervals of 1’.  This map includes a 62 page booklet, illustrated with numerous colour photographs, IN SPANISH ONLY with descriptions of recommended hiking routes, lists of campsites and other accommodation, etc. The guide also contains lists of useful addresses, including accommodation, notes on the park’s history, flora and fauna, and safety rules and recommendations.  This map also indicates locations for bird watching.

Walking in Extremadura

There is a wealth of walking routes in this unblemished region of Spain. This book includes information on estimated distances, walking times, and degree of difficulty. Extremadura, on the western border of Spain with Portugal, is an important area for wildlife and walking. There is a major reserve at Monfrague, which was designated a National Park in 2007, in addition to the Tagus River Natural Park. Monfrague is an outstanding bird watching area, especially for raptors such as the Eurasian Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, and the Spanish Imperial and Golden Eagles. With a Mediterranean climate influenced in the north where it is continental, and to the west where the influence of the Atlantic make it milder, this is a year-round destination for dedicated walkers.

Los museos dependientes del Gobierno extremeño abren sus puertas durante el Puente de Todos Los Santos

Los museos extremeños que dependen del Gobierno regional y el Centro de Artes Visuales Fundación Helga de Alvear estarán abiertos al público durante el próximo puente de Todos Los Santos, incluido el día 1 de noviembre, festivo nacional.  Así, el Museo de Cáceres, el Vostell de Malpartida de Cáceres, el Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (Meiac) de Badajoz, y el Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Badajoz abrirán sus puertas, en horario normal, los días 2, 3 y 4 de noviembre.   En estos museos se recibirá también a los visitantes el jueves 1 de noviembre, aunque “con variaciones sobre el horario habitual en algunos casos”, informa el Gobierno extremeño en nota de prensa.

Concretamente, en el Museo de Cáceres, el horario del Día de Todos Los Santos será de 10,00 a 15,00 y de 16,00 a 19,30 horas. Las personas que se acerquen a este espacio cultural podrán contemplar, además de la colección permanente, la exposición temporal ‘Mujeres: tipos y estereotipos’, compuesta por imágenes del fotógrafo José Ortiz Echagüe en las que, “a través de los retratos femenimos, se documentan tipos humanos en vías de desaparición”.

Por su parte, en el MEIAC, el horario del 1 de noviembre será de 10,00 a 15,00 horas y la jornada festiva permitirá visitar también la oferta habitual del centro y dos muestras temporales, como son ‘Antología de Gervasio Sánchez’, que traza un extenso recorrido por la dilatada trayectoria fotoperiodística del Premio Nacional de Fotografía 2009, y ‘Trayectorias. Diez años de video y fotografía en la Colección Coca-Cola’, que recoge la obra reciente de 37 artistas españoles y portugueses, entre los que se encuentran autores como Chema Alvargonzález, José Manuel Ballester, Daniel Canogar o Joao Penalva.

Por su parte, el Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Badajoz y el Vostell de Malpartida de Cáceres abrirán sus puertas el Día de Todos Los Santos en horario de 10,00 a 15,00 horas en el caso del Arqueológico Pacense y de 10,00 a 13,30 y de 16,00 a 18,30 horas en el caso del Vostell.

Finalmente, el Centro de Artes Visuales de Cáceres Fundación Helga de Alvear atenderá al público los días 1, 2 y 3 de noviembre por la mañana y por la tarde, de 10,00 a 14,00 horas y de 17,00 a 20,00 horas, y el domingo 4 de noviembre solo por la mañana, de 10,00 a 14,30 horas.  Este museo acoge actualmente la exposición ‘Juegos de Lenguaje’, inaugurada el pasado viernes coincidiendo con la celebración de Forosur Cáceres 12.

De esta forma, la Consejería de Educación y Cultura pretende “dar respuesta a la demanda de los turistas que estos días eligen Extremadura como destino”, así como “facilitar el acceso a las colecciones permanentes o a las exposiciones temporales de centros museísticos de referencia en la región”.

    Gisela Radant Wood’s ‘Walking in Extremadura’ is an excellent book in English for anyone visiting Extremadura with routes for city tours also included.
